Kallang/Whampoa

Introduction

About 120,000 local residents reside in the Kallang/Whampoa area, which lies over 9 sq km at the southeastern part of Singapore along the Kallang River. Sub-zones and nearby districts comprising Balestier, Tanjong Rhu, Bendemeer, Kallang Bahru, Boon Keng, Geylang Bahru, Crawford, Bugis, Lavender and Kampong Java. In particular, the Whampoa estate is located at the confluence of Kallang River and Sungei Whampoa, around Whampoa Drive, St George’s Avenue, Jalan Rajah, Jalan Bahagia and McNair Road. Whampoa is one of the few estates in Singapore where you can find rare two-storey terrace houses classified as three-room HDB flats built by HDB’s predecessor, the Singapore Improvement Trust. Like their high-rise counterparts, these “flats” have a 99-year lease. Generally, this matured estate, established since the 70s, is known for its eclectic mix of old and new, modern and quaint. In addition, following URA’s plans to develop Kallang into a sports hub, the Kallang Riverside is slated to be transformed into a new lifestyle district, offering waterfront homes with a mix of retail and entertainment facilities with the Singapore Sports Hub expected to be completed by 2011.
