Woodlands set to become 'star destination'

WOODLANDS will offer close to 10,000 new housing units in addition to a new business hub as part of a revamp to transform the area into the "star destination of the north".

"The Woodlands Regional Centre will be a new hub for businesses, especially those with Malaysian and Asean linkages," said Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong on Sunday.

He said this at an exhibition showcasing the plans for the area under the Housing & Development Board's Remaking Our Heartland programme.

The makeover for Woodlands will be implemented within the next five to 10 years. A budget has yet to be finalised.

The new residential developments will be located at Woodlands Central and Woodlands North Coast - which make up Woodlands Regional Centre, one of the new six "star attractions" to revitalise the area.

The Woodlands Central homes - which will be near the existingWoodlands MRT StationandCauseway Point mall- will be integrated with a pedestrian mall with commercial and community facilities.

The authorities have yet to decide if these residences will be public or private housing units.

The Woodlands North Coast public housing development will offer "housing in the woods", leveraging the hilly terrain so residents may enjoy good views ofAdmiralty Parkand the Straits of Johor.

Woodlands North Coast is also where the business hub will be located; space will be set aside for SMEs, and JTC Corporation will announce the detailed plans when they are ready.

Woodlands Waterfront - a popular recreational locale on Singapore's northern tip - will be revamped and a new rustic park introduced.

Next to the existing Woodlands MRT Station, a new town plaza will be built. Another star attraction will be a 1.9-km link with dedicated cycling and pedestrian paths, called WoodsVista Gallery, connecting Woodlands Central to the waterfront.

The existing Woodlands Town Garden in Marsiling will be upgraded and feature a boardwalk, playground and a heritage corner. It will be renamed Marsiling Park when completed.

Next to the upcoming Woodlands South MRT Station (on the Thomson-East Coast Line) will be the Wellness Haven, including a health campus that will comprise a new acute care hospital, community hospital and a long-term care facility to be rolled out in phases from 2022.

Beside Admiralty MRT Station there will be the Community Nexus, with facilities such as a medical centre, eldercare and childcare centres, a hawker centre, dining and retail outlets in addition to housing for the elderly.
